Exports in Africa
In 2022, shipments abroad of cigarettes containing tobacco increased by X% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X units), distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Kenya (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Tanzania (X units) represented the largest exporters of cigarettes containing tobacco, together making up X% of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X units) and Uganda (X units) - each finished at a X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cigarettes containing tobacco supplying countries in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Kenya ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. Senegal, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Among the main exporting countries, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Africa stood at less than $X per thousand units in 2022, shrinking by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at less than $X per thousand units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal (less than $X per thousand units), while Tanzania (less than $X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, supplies from abroad of cigarettes containing tobacco increased by X% to X units, rising for the seventh consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Libya (X units) and Somalia (X units) represented the largest importers of cigarettes containing tobacco in 2022, recording near X% and X% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Guinea (X units), committing a X% share of total imports. Morocco (X units), Niger (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Nigeria (X units), South Africa (X units), Mali (X units), Mauritania (X units), Tunisia (X units), Namibia (X units) and Angola (X units) took a little share of total imports.

Based on 2022 figures, cigarettes containing tobacco import price increased by X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of less than $X per thousand units. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia (less than $X per thousand units), while Nigeria (less than $X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
