Exports in Africa

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of bituminous mixtures, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), generating a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of X%).

In value terms, the largest bituminous mixtures supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X) and Ghana ($X).

Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kenya represented the largest importer of bituminous mixtures in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2022. Ethiopia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Uganda (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

Imports into Kenya increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lesotho (X%), Egypt (X%), Rwanda (X%), Cameroon (X%), Uganda (X%) and Ethiopia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kenya (X p.p.), Lesotho (X p.p.), Egypt (X p.p.), Ethiopia (X p.p.), Uganda (X p.p.) and Rwanda (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (X p.p.) and Tanzania (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Lesotho, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
