Berry Market Size in Africa

The African berry market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed moderate growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Berry Production in Africa

In value terms, berry production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by X%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production.

The average berry yield dropped slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, leveling off at the year before. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, berry exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Morocco was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached X% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (X%). Zimbabwe (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to berry exports from Morocco stood at X%. At the same time, South Africa (X%), Zimbabwe (X%) and Egypt (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented the largest importers of berries in Africa, together amounting to approx. X% of total imports. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
