Exports by Country
South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Rwanda (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons), together achieving a X% share of total exports. Equatorial Guinea (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of base metal padlocks. At the same time, Rwanda (X%), Tunisia (X%), Egypt (X%) and Nigeria (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Equatorial Guinea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Rwanda (X p.p.), Tunisia (X p.p.), Equatorial Guinea (X p.p.) and Egypt (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest base metal padlock supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a X% share.
In South Africa, base metal padlock exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (X% per year) and Egypt (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of X%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Base Metal Padlock Imports

In 2022, purchases abroad of base metal padlocks decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, base metal padlock imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the key importers of base metal padlocks in Africa, together finishing at near X% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Cameroon (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Sudan (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports. Angola (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Cameroon ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined X% share of total imports. Sudan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Morocco, Guinea, Nigeria, Mozambique, Rwanda, Angola and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of X%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Djibouti (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
