It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), generating a 10% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to coated arc-welding electrode exports from South Africa stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Rwanda (+78.3%) and Egypt (+22.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +78.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-4.0%), Kenya (-4.7%), Morocco (-17.7%) and Tunisia (-19.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Egypt and Rwanda increased by +15, +8.9 and +4.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest coated arc-welding electrode supplier in Africa, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+16.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+5.6% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+12.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of coated base metal electrodes for electric arc-welding, when their volume decreased by -11.9% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, coated arc-welding electrode imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021.
