Exports in Africa

In 2020, approx. X tonnes of ball or roller bearings were exported in Africa; with an increase of X% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The volume of export peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bearing exports soared to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, exports reached the peak of $X. from 2011 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates bearing exports structure, recording X tonnes, which was near X% of total exports in 2020. Namibia (X tonnes) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -X% from 2007 to 2020. At the same time, Namibia (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. While the share of Namibia (+X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2007-2020, the share of South Africa (-X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest bearing supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Namibia ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

In South Africa, bearing exports decreased by an average annual rate of -X% over the period from 2007-2020.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the bearing export price in Africa amounted to $X per tonne, declining by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, export prices reached the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per tonne), while Namibia stood at $X per tonne.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa.

Bearing Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2020, overseas purchases of ball or roller bearings decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tonnes, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, bearing imports dropped to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, South Africa (X tonnes), distantly followed by Egypt (X tonnes), Algeria (X tonnes), Morocco (X tonnes), Tanzania (X tonnes) and Nigeria (X tonnes) represented the main importers of ball or roller bearings, together comprising X% of total imports. Ghana (X tonnes), Sudan (X tonnes), Kenya (X tonnes), Ethiopia (X tonnes), Uganda (X tonnes), Tunisia (X tonnes) and Zimbabwe (X tonnes) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, average annual rates of growth with regard to bearing imports into South Africa stood at -X%. At the same time, Uganda (+X%), Sudan (+X%), Ethiopia (+X%), Ghana (+X%), Kenya (+X%), Tanzania (+X%), Zimbabwe (+X%) and Egypt (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. Morocco, Nigeria and Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2020, the share of Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Ethiopia and Kenya increased by +X%, +X%, +X%, +X%, +X% and +X% percentage points, while Algeria (-X p.p.) and South Africa (-X p.p.) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ball or roller bearings in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Egypt ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+X% per year) and Morocco (+X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2020, the bearing import price in Africa amounted to $X per tonne, picking up by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when the import price increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per tonne), while Uganda ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
