In 2022, the African avocado market decreased by X% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. The total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. Moreover, avocado production in Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ethiopia (X tons), threefold. Malawi (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.

In Kenya, avocado production expanded at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ethiopia (X% per year) and Malawi (X% per year).

The average avocado yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, flattening at the year before. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the avocado yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in Africa

For the third year in a row, Africa recorded growth in overseas shipments of avocados, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, avocado exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main exporters of avocados, together achieving X% of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons), Burundi (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
