In 2021, the African aluminium hydroxide market decreased by -44.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded resilient growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, aluminium hydroxide production declined rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 1,573%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, exports of aluminium hydroxide in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 24% on 2020. Overall, exports, however, faced a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 148%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium hydroxide exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a dramatic descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 69%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Sierra Leone was the main exporter of aluminium hydroxide in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 64% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Mozambique (7.3%), Seychelles (6%) and Kenya (5.9%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - each recorded a 3.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium hydroxide exports from Sierra Leone stood at +12.9%. At the same time, Kenya (+46.8%) and Egypt (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +46.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-25.3%), Seychelles (-29.8%), South Africa (-38.8%) and Mozambique (-49.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Sierra Leone (+64 p.p.), Mozambique (+7.3 p.p.), Seychelles (+6 p.p.), Kenya (+5.9 p.p.) and Egypt (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-13.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) remains the largest aluminium hydroxide supplier in Africa, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Seychelles, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sierra Leone amounted to +16.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-20.3% per year) and Seychelles (+15.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 1,481%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Seychelles (+64.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of aluminium hydroxide increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 27%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium hydroxide imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Tunisia was the key importer of aluminium hydroxide in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 54% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (11%), South Africa (6.4%) and Kenya (5%). The following importers - Seychelles (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each recorded a 6.6% share of total imports.
Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of aluminium hydroxide. At the same time, Seychelles (+109.7%), Nigeria (+30.7%), Kenya (+7.0%) and Morocco (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +109.7% from 2012-2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+9.7 p.p.), Seychelles (+3.3 p.p.) and Kenya (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-1.6 p.p.) and South Africa (-10.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported aluminium hydroxide in Africa, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Seychelles ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 13% share.
In Tunisia, aluminium hydroxide imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Seychelles (+115.9% per year) and Nigeria (+19.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
