Vanilla Price in Canada (CIF) - 2022

The average vanilla import price stood at $167,000 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -2.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 180%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $202,107 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($209,737 per ton), while the price for the United States ($41,446 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+29.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Vanilla Price in Canada (FOB) - 2023

In June 2023, the average vanilla export price amounted to $124K per ton, falling by -6.3% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 56% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $148K per ton. From December 2022 to June 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($158K per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($69,124 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Vanilla Imports in Canada

In 2022, imports of vanilla into Canada rose markedly to 442 tons, increasing by 7.5% compared with the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +99.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, vanilla imports totaled $74M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +102.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 93%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 87%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, vanilla exports soared to $45M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback.
