Tin Price in the UK (CIF) - 2023

The average tin import price stood at $28,087 per ton in June 2023, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 23% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $39,003 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Poland ($29,366 per ton) and Bolivia ($28,676 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($25,780 per ton) and Peru ($27,369 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bolivia (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Tin Price in the UK (FOB) - 2022

The average tin export price stood at $33,022 per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($51,654 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($11,922 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+12.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tin Imports in the UK

In 2022, the amount of tin imported into the UK expanded markedly to 3.8K tons, with an increase of 8.2% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tin imports expanded notably to $124M in 2022. In general, imports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 67%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, tin exports fell sharply to $3M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +40.6% against 2020 indices. Tin prices peaked at $39,159 per ton in November 2021, soaring by 79% from the beginning of that year. The spike was driven by a shortage resulting from sharply heightened demand from the electronics sector, where tin is used for circuit board manufacturing, while the total volume of metal production was insufficient. According to October World Bank’s forecast, the average annual tin price should drop from an expected $31,250 per ton in 2021 to $31,000 per ton in 2022.
