Price for Canned Fruit and Vegetable in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average canned fruit and vegetable import price amounted to $1,699 per ton, shrinking by -5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 an increase of 15% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,789 per ton in July 2023, and then dropped slightly in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($3,071 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($595 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average canned fruit and vegetable export price stood at $1,885 per ton in August 2023, surging by 1.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2023 an increase of 5.3% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,947 per ton in October 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($3,170 per ton), while the average price for exports to El Salvador ($957 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Canned Fruit and Vegetable in the United States
In 2022, the amount of canned fruit and vegetables imported into the United States soared to 5.7M tons, jumping by 24% compared with 2021. In general, imports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 55%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, canned fruit and vegetable imports surged to $9.2B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
