U.S. Potassium Sulphate (SOP) Import Price per Ton in May 2022

In May 2022, the potassium sulphate (sop) price per ton stood at $637.3 (CIF, US), increasing by 15% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated resilient growth from January 2022 to May 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +6.6% over the last four-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2022 figures, potassium sulphate (SOP) import price decreased by -26.7% against March 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when the average import price increased by 38% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $869.6 per ton. From April 2022 to May 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1.5K per ton), while the price for Germany ($546.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Potassium Sulphate (SOP) Imports

In August 2022, supplies from abroad of potassium sulphate (SOP) decreased by -24.1% to 2.5K tons, falling for the fourth consecutive month after two months of growth. In general, imports recorded a sharp slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 when imports increased by 158% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 26K tons. From May 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potassium sulphate (SOP) imports plummeted to $2.4M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 82% m-o-m.

U.S. Potassium Sulphate (SOP) Imports by Country

In May 2022, Germany (11K tons) constituted the largest potassium sulphate (SOP) supplier to the United States, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, potassium sulphate (SOP) imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (3.4K tons), threefold.

From January 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled +3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Canada (-1.6% per month) and Belgium (+7.1% per month).

In value terms, Germany ($6M) constituted the largest supplier of potassium sulphate (SOP) to the United States, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($3M), with a 32% share of total imports.

From January 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Germany totaled +9.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Canada (+7.0% per month) and Belgium (+18.8% per month).
