Polyurethanes Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

The average polyurethanes import price stood at $3,903 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($9,184 per ton), while the price for Poland ($323 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Polyurethanes Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average polyurethanes export price stood at $3,702 per ton in 2022, growing by 3.4% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polyurethanes export price increased by +23.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 45%. The export price peaked at $3,844 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($5,569 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($1,546 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mozambique (+17.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Polyurethanes Imports in South Africa

In 2022, the amount of polyurethanes in primary forms imported into South Africa expanded markedly to 16K tons, with an increase of 6.6% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 17%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, polyurethanes imports soared to $64M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
