View PricingPlants Used for Biofuel Production
Plants used for biofuel production are those that are able to generate energy with less emissions of pollutants than fossil fuels. They are renewable and sustainable sources of energy and produce fewer greenhouse gases. The most common types of plants used for biofuel are:
- Corn: Corn is one of the most popular biofuel crops because it has a high starch content. Corn-derived ethanol is used as a blend for gasoline and can also be used as an exclusive fuel. The downside of using corn as a biofuel is that it requires a large amount of water and fertilizers to grow, which can be costly and environmentally damaging.
- Soybean: Soybean contains a high level of oil, which can be converted into biodiesel. Soybean biodiesel has a low emission of greenhouse gases and is a renewable source of energy. However, producing soybeans also requires a significant amount of inputs like water and fertilizers.
- Sugarcane: Sugarcane is a crop that requires minimal water and energy inputs. It is grown in tropical areas and is a popular biofuel crop in countries like Brazil. Sugarcane-based ethanol is a renewable fuel that releases fewer pollutants than gasoline.
- Jatropha: Jatropha is a crop that can grow on non-arable land, which makes it an attractive crop for biofuel production. The oil extracted from its seeds can be converted into biofuel. Jatropha is a drought-resistant crop that does not require large amounts of water to grow.
- Algae: Algae is a promising biofuel crop because it can produce large amounts of oil per acre of land. Algae-based biodiesel has a low carbon footprint and can be grown in a variety of climates. However, producing algae requires a significant amount of water and energy inputs.
Biofuels derived from these plants are an attractive alternative to fossil fuels because they are renewable, sustainable, and produce fewer harmful emissions. However, their production can also have negative impacts on the environment, such as deforestation, water use, and increased use of fertilizers. It is important to carefully consider the environmental impacts of biofuel production and to seek out sustainable and efficient methods for their production.

Discover the top import markets for biodiesel and how these countries are driving the growth of the industry. Learn why the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and Spain are leading the way in biodiesel imports.
This year, Belgium is overtaking Germany to emerge as the second-largest biodiesel exporter in the world. From January to July 2021, Belgium supplied biodiesel worth $2.1B abroad, while Germany’s exports were estimated at $1.8B. The Netherlands keeps the leading position with a biodiesel export value of $4.2B. In 2020, Germany ($2.3B) followed the Netherlands ($4.6B) in global export ranking, while Belgium ($1.5B) took third place. The average biodiesel export price grew by +11% y-o-y to $979 per ton in 2020.
Neither the pandemic nor the low oil prices succeeded in slowing the growth of the global biodiesel market. As economies worldwide start to recover from the Covid crisis, and environmental concerns increase, the demand is set to remain robust in 2021.
