Margarine and Shortening Price in China (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average margarine and shortening import price amounted to $1,142 per ton, surging by 16% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight downturn. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1,418 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($1,608 per ton), while the price for Indonesia amounted to $893 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-1.1%).

Margarine and Shortening Price in China (FOB) - 2023
The average margarine and shortening export price stood at $2,774 per ton in September 2023, remaining stable against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 26% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $3,955 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($6,860 per ton), while the average price for exports to Uzbekistan ($2,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Margarine and Shortening Imports in China
In 2022, the amount of margarine and shortening imported into China surged to 1.1M tons, jumping by 17% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, margarine and shortening imports soared to $1.5B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Margarine and Shortening Exports in China
In 2022, shipments abroad of margarine and shortening was finally on the rise to reach 10K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage.
In value terms, margarine and shortening exports expanded sharply to $38M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
