Cotton Lint Price in China (CIF) - 2023

In September 2023, the average cotton lint import price amounted to $2,086 per ton, almost unchanged from the previous month. In general, the import price saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 5.5% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $3,076 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Australia ($2,131 per ton) and the United States ($2,122 per ton), while the price for Sudan ($1,920 per ton) and Brazil ($1,990 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (-1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Cotton Lint Price in China (FOB) - 2022

The average cotton lint export price stood at $3,122 per ton in 2022, surging by 34% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cotton lint export price increased by +104.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 52%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to South Korea ($3,818 per ton) and India ($3,445 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($2,946 per ton) and Bangladesh ($3,018 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cotton Lint Imports in China

In 2022, overseas purchases of cotton lint decreased by -10% to 1.9M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 2.2M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton lint imports skyrocketed to $5.2B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +46.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
