Clove Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

The average clove import price stood at $4,348 per ton in 2022, reducing by -15.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $6,537 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Comoros ($9,621 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($2,614 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Clove Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average clove export price stood at $3,248 per ton in 2022, which is down by -9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 26% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $5,992 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($10,881 per ton), while the average price for exports to Solomon Islands ($898 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+15.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Clove Imports in South Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of cloves decreased by -4.3% to 385 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 493 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, clove imports declined rapidly to $1.7M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 16%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $2.1M, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
