View PricingBiodiesel Is Produced From Oils and Fats Using
Biodiesel is a renewable and sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, made from a variety of vegetable oils and fats. It is derived through a process known as transesterification, in which triglycerides (the main component of oils and fats) are reacted with an alcohol (usually methanol or ethanol), in the presence of a catalyst, such as sodium hydroxide.
The result of this reaction is the production of biodiesel and glycerol – a valuable by-product used in various applications within the manufacturing industry. The resulting biodiesel can be used in diesel engines, either alone or blended with regular diesel fuel, without any modification to the engine or fuel system.
The main source of feedstock for biodiesel is vegetable oils, such as soybean, canola, palm, and sunflower oil, although animal fats and used cooking oils can also be used. The choice of feedstock depends on the availability, price, and environmental impact of each oil or fat source.
The production of biodiesel from oils and fats typically involves several steps, beginning with the pretreatment of the feedstock. This includes filtering out any impurities, water, or free fatty acids, as well as heating the oil to reduce its viscosity. After pretreatment, the oil or fat is mixed with alcohol and a catalyst, and then agitated to encourage the reaction to occur. The resulting biodiesel and glycerol are then separated using a centrifuge or settling tank.
The use of biodiesel has several advantages, including its renewable and sustainable nature, reduced emissions of particulates and greenhouse gases, and improved energy security and independence. Additionally, the production of biodiesel from waste fats and oils can help to divert these materials from landfills, reduce pollution, and provide a new source of revenue for the waste management industry.
However, there are also some challenges associated with biodiesel production, such as the potential for competition with food crops for land and resources, the need for large amounts of energy and water in the production process, and the impact of increased demand on prices and availability of feedstocks.

Discover the top import markets for biodiesel and how these countries are driving the growth of the industry. Learn why the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and Spain are leading the way in biodiesel imports.
This year, Belgium is overtaking Germany to emerge as the second-largest biodiesel exporter in the world. From January to July 2021, Belgium supplied biodiesel worth $2.1B abroad, while Germany’s exports were estimated at $1.8B. The Netherlands keeps the leading position with a biodiesel export value of $4.2B. In 2020, Germany ($2.3B) followed the Netherlands ($4.6B) in global export ranking, while Belgium ($1.5B) took third place. The average biodiesel export price grew by +11% y-o-y to $979 per ton in 2020.
Neither the pandemic nor the low oil prices succeeded in slowing the growth of the global biodiesel market. As economies worldwide start to recover from the Covid crisis, and environmental concerns increase, the demand is set to remain robust in 2021.
