Whisky Price in U.S. Averages $8.6 per Litre, Fluctuating Mildly in 2022
U.S. Whisky Import Price August 2022
In August 2022, the average whisky price amounted to $8.6K per thousand litres, picking up by 8.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 an increase of 19% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $9 per litre in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to August 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($33.5K per thousand litres), while the price for Canada ($2.5K per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Whisky Imports
In August 2022, overseas purchases of whisky decreased by -15.5% to 17M litres, falling for the third consecutive month after three months of growth. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 27% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 24M litres in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whisky imports contracted to $144M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 36% month-to-month. Imports peaked at $203M in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Whisky Imports by Country
Canada (7.5M litres), the UK (5.8M litres) and Ireland (2.7M litres) were the main suppliers of whisky imports to the United States, with a combined 96% share of total imports. Japan lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 2.8%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the UK ($96M) constituted the largest supplier of whisky to the United States, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($19M), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from the UK was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Canada (-1.4% per month) and Japan (+27.2% per month).
