In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of lemon and lime production were India (3,106 thousand tonnes), Mexico (2,273 thousand tonnes), China (2,265 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 45% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of lemon and lime production among the main producing countries was attained by India (+3.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the output figures.

Global Lemons and Limes Production

Global lemon and lime production amounted to 16,978 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +3.0% against the previous year level. Overall, the global lemon and lime output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +0.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when the output figure increased by +7% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global lemon and lime production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global lemon and lime production was primarily driven by growth of population. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the lemon and lime output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a slight contraction of the yield figures.

The world lemon and lime harvested area amounted to 1,115 thousand ha in 2015, which was 3.9% more than the previous year figure. The lemon and lime harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +1.1% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total lemon and lime harvested area peaked in 2009, falling back in the following year. From 2010 to 2015, the total lemon and lime harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
