In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the kola nut output was Nigeria (125 thousand tonnes), accounting for 50% of global production. Moreover, kola nut output in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Côte D'Ivoire (52 thousand tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Cameroon with a share of 17%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of kola nut producton in Nigeria stood at +2.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Côte D'Ivoire (-2.8% per year) and Cameroon (+1.2% per year).

Global Kola Nuts Production

Global kola nut production amounted to 250 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -3.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global kola nut output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +17% from the previous year level. In that year, the global kola nut production attained its maximum volume of 296 thousand tonnes. From 2008 to 2015, the total kola nut output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global kola nut production was primarily driven by growth of medical care and personal care products. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the kola nut output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a noticeable contraction of the yield figures.

The world kola nut harvested area amounted to 501 thousand ha in 2015, which was -1.2% less than the previous year figure. The kola nut harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +2.5% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total kola nut harvested area peaked in 2010, falling back in the following year. From 2011 to 2015, the total kola nut harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
