In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of fig production were Turkey (317 thousand tonnes), Egypt (180 thousand tonnes), Morocco (138 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 54% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of fig production among the main producing countries was attained by Morocco (+10.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the output figures.

Global Figs Production

Global fig production amounted to 1,182 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +4.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global fig output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +7% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global fig production attained its maximum volume of 1,182 thousand tonnes in 2007. From 2008 to 2015, the total fig output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global fig production was primarily driven by population growth and diversification of diet. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the fig output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a noticeable curtailment of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world fig harvested area amounted to 358 thousand ha in 2015, which was -1.6% less than the previous year figure. The fig harvested area indicated a pronounced contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -2.1% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total fig harvested area peaked in 2007, declining in the following year. From 2008 to 2015, the total fig harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
