Which Country Imports the Most X-Ray Apparatus in the World?

In 2016, the amount of x-ray apparatus imported worldwide stood at 186K tonnes, reducing by -2.0% against the previous year figure. In general, x-ray apparatus imports continue to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012, when imports increased by 8% from the previous year level. In that year, global x-ray apparatus imports reached its maximum volume of 232K tonnes. From 2013 to 2016, growth of global x-ray apparatus imports failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, x-ray apparatus imports totaled $21B in 2016. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, global x-ray apparatus imports attained its maximum level of $22B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

X-Ray Apparatus Imports By Country

In 2016, Germany (33K tonnes), distantly followed by France (15K tonnes), the U.S. (14K tonnes), the Netherlands (14K tonnes), the UK (12K tonnes), Japan (12K tonnes), and Italy (9.1K tonnes) represented the major importers of x-ray apparatus, together creating 58% of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (5.4K tonnes), Spain (4.1K tonnes), Thailand (3.7K tonnes), Finland (3.4K tonnes), and South Korea (3K tonnes) together made up 11% of total imports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, Thailand (+21.0%), Spain (+7.4%), Japan (+2.7%), Italy (+2.7%), France (+2.5%), and the UK (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2007-2016. Finland, and South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.2%), Belgium (-3.2%), and the U.S. (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of the U.S. increased by 13% percentage points, while France (-1.6%), and Thailand (-1.6%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the U.S. ($4.2B) constitutes the largest market for imported x-ray apparatus worldwide, making up 21% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan ($1.4B), with the share of 7% of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with the share of 6%.

In the U.S., x-ray apparatus imports stood at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates: Japan (+4.5% per year) and Germany (-0.9% per year).

X-Ray Apparatus Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for x-ray apparatus amounted to $110 per kg, increasing by 2% against the previous year. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%.The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, an increase of 12% from the previous year level. Global x-ray apparatus import peaked in 2016, and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was the U.S. ($303 per kg), while Germany ($35 per kg) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of x-ray apparatus import prices was attained by the U.S. (+13.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
