Which Country Imports the Most Woven Carpets in the World?

In 2016, approx. 59K tonnes of knotted carpet were imported worldwide; dropping by ;3.0% against the previous year figure. Overall, knotted carpet imports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. Knotted Carpet Imports By Country

The U.S. (22K tonnes) represented the largest importing country with an import of about 22K tonnes, which reached 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the UK (7.9K tonnes), Germany (4.1K tonnes), and Mauritania (2.8K tonnes), together making up 25% share of total knotted carpet imports. France (1.5K tonnes), Italy (1.3K tonnes), Ethiopia (1.2K tonnes), Australia (1.1K tonnes), and United Arab Emirates (1.1K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to knotted carpet imports into the U.S. stood at ;4.9%. At the same time, Ethiopia (+8.4%), the UK (+4.1%), and Mauritania (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2007;2016. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Australia (;2.8%), United Arab Emirates (;6.8%), Germany (;13.9%), and Italy (;14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of the U.S., Germany, Italy, and United Arab Emirates increased by 22%, 20%, 7%, and 2% percentage points, while the UK (;4.1%), and Mauritania (;2.3%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the U.S. ($450M) constitutes the largest market for imported knotted carpet worldwide, making up 47% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($97M), with the share of 10% of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with the share of 5%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of knotted carpet imports in the U.S. decreased by ;2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (;11.0% per year) and the UK (;2.9% per year).

Knotted Carpet Import Prices By Country

The average knotted carpet import price stood at $16 per kg in 2016, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, knotted carpet import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012, when it surged by 6% y;o;y. Global knotted carpet import peaked of $18 per kg in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Germany ($23 per kg), while Mauritania ($569 per tonne) was among the lowest.
