Steel Pipe And Tube Imports By Country

In 2016, China (810K tonnes), distantly followed by India (382K tonnes), United Arab Emirates (317K tonnes), Qatar (200K tonnes), and Japan (158K tonnes) were the main importers of steel pipe and tube, together comprising 55% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (107K tonnes), France (102K tonnes), Myanmar (94K tonnes), Italy (59K tonnes), and the U.S. (58K tonnes) held the weak share of total imports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, Myanmar (+89.8%), United Arab Emirates (+14.4%), and India (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +89.8% from 2007;2016. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (;2.0%), Qatar (;2.1%), Italy (;2.4%), the U.S. (;2.8%), and France (;11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of France (6%) increased significantly, the share of Myanmar (;2.7%), India (;3.3%), and United Arab Emirates (;6.5%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Qatar ($269M) constitutes the largest market for imported steel pipe and tube worldwide, making up 16% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by France ($101M), with the share of 6% of global imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with the share of 5%.

In Qatar, steel pipe and tube imports expanded at an average annual rate of +0.1% over the period from 2007;2016. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates: France (+5.5% per year) and Saudi Arabia (;6.9% per year).

Steel Pipe And Tube Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for steel pipe and tube amounted to $506 per tonne, shrinking by ;7.3% against the previous year. Overall, steel pipe and tube import price continues to indicate a mild deduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when it surged by 19% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, average steel pipe and tube import price reached its maximum level of $774 per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Qatar ($1,342 per tonne), while China ($5 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of steel pipe and tube import prices was attained by Japan (+44.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
