Which Country Imports the Most Vinegar in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Vinegar - Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2016, approx. 599K tonnes of vinegar were imported worldwide- jumping by 8% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a prominent increase from 2007 to 2016: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, vinegar imports increased by +85.2% against its level of 2009. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when imports increased by 20% y-o-y. Global vinegar import peaked in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

In value terms, vinegar imports totaled $631M in 2016. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2007 to 2016- however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global vinegar import peaked of $680M in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Vinegar Imports By Country

In 2016, the U.S. (101K tonnes), distantly followed by France (55K tonnes), Germany (48K tonnes), Italy (47K tonnes), and Canada (31K tonnes) were the major importers of vinegar, together constituting 47% of total imports. The following importers - the UK (27K tonnes), the Netherlands (18K tonnes), Spain (17K tonnes), Switzerland (15K tonnes), Australia (13K tonnes), Czech Republic (12K tonnes), and Hungary (11K tonnes) together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of vinegar imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Hungary (+37.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($134M), Germany ($71M) and France ($42M) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2016, with a combined 39% share of global imports.Canada, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, Spain, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Hungary (+19.9% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the vinegar imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Vinegar Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for vinegar amounted to $1,053 per tonne, going down by -5.5% against the previous year. In general, vinegar import price continues to indicate a mild deduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when it surged by 13% y-o-y. Global vinegar import peaked of $1,459 per tonne in 2009- however, from 2010 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was Germany ($1,460 per tonne), while Hungary ($329 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of vinegar import prices was attained by the U.S. (+1.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
