Which Country Imports the Most Tea in the World?

Global tea imports amounted to 1,763 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -4.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global tea imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +11% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global tea imports attained its maximum volume of 1,861 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total tea imports growth failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, global tea imports amounted to $6,404 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global tea imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +5.4%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Tea Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of the tea imports in 2015 were Russia (173 thousand tonnes), Pakistan (165 thousand tonnes), the United Kingdom (135 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 27% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of tea imports among the main importing countries was attained by Egypt (+18.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia (638 million USD), the United States (469 million USD) and the United Arab Emirates (468 million USD) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2015, together accounting for 25% of total imports.

Egypt (+34.8% per year) had the highest growth rates of tea imports among the main importing countries over the last eight years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
