Global sewing thread imports totaled 130K tonnes in 2016, waning by -30.9% against the previous year figure. In general, sewing thread imports continue to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013, when import increased by 40% y-o-y. In that year, global sewing thread imports reached its maximum volume of 282K tonnes. From 2014 to 2016, growth of global sewing thread imports failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, sewing thread imports totaled $1B in 2016. In general, sewing thread imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Global sewing thread import peaked of $1.3B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Sewing Thread Imports By Country

In 2016, Mexico (9K tonnes), Romania (6.8K tonnes), Czech Republic (5.8K tonnes), Viet Nam (5.1K tonnes), China (4.9K tonnes), Pakistan (4.8K tonnes), Spain (4.5K tonnes), Germany (4.2K tonnes), Italy (3.6K tonnes), the UK (3.5K tonnes), Poland (3.2K tonnes), and France (3.1K tonnes) were the major importers of sewing thread in the world, achieving 45% of total import.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of sewing thread imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Spain (+11.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sewing thread markets worldwide were Mexico ($98M), Germany ($63M) and China ($60M), with a combined 21% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Viet Nam, Romania, Italy, Czech Republic, Poland, Pakistan, France, Spain and the UK, which together accounted for a further 27%.

Czech Republic (+10.2% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of sewing thread imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sewing Thread Import Prices By Country

The average sewing thread import price stood at $7,935 per tonne in 2016, rising by 20% against the previous year. Overall, sewing thread import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015, when import increased by 27% against the previous year level. Global sewing thread import peaked in 2016, and is expected to retain its growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Germany ($15 per kg), while Spain ($3,987 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of sewing thread import prices was attained by Czech Republic (+15.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
