Which Country Imports the Most Poppy Seed in the World?

Global poppy seed imports amounted to 82 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -6.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global poppy seed imports indicated a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume decreased at an average annual rate of -0.7% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +20% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global poppy seed imports attained its maximum volume of 90 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total poppy seed imports growth failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, global poppy seed imports amounted to $172 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global poppy seed imports decreased slightly from 2007 to 2015, curtailing at an average annual rate of -0.4%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Poppy Seed Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of the poppy seed imports in 2015 were India (12 thousand tonnes), Poland (9 thousand tonnes), Germany (9 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 37% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of poppy seed imports among the main importing countries was attained by Czechia (+17.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India (36 million USD), Germany (19 million USD) and Russia (14 million USD) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2015, together accounting for 40% of total imports.

India (+14.3% per year) had the highest growth rates of poppy seed imports among the main importing countries over the last eight years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
