Global polycarboxylic acid imports totaled 11M tonnes in 2016, descending by -3.9% against the previous year level. In general, polycarboxylic acid imports continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when it surged by 12% y-o-y. In that year, global polycarboxylic acid imports attained its maximum volume of 16M tonnes. From 2011 to 2016, growth of global polycarboxylic acid imports stood at a somewhat lower level.

Polycarboxylic Acid Imports By Country

In 2016, the U.S. (1.2M tonnes), China (1.2M tonnes), Germany (890K tonnes), India (727K tonnes), Italy (627K tonnes), Turkey (619K tonnes), Lithuania (510K tonnes), Spain (408K tonnes), the Netherlands (347K tonnes), Brazil (343K tonnes), Russia (301K tonnes), and Japan (284K tonnes) represented the major importers of polycarboxylic acid in the world, constituting 68% of total import.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of polycarboxylic acid imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Russia (+23.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polycarboxylic acid markets worldwide were the U.S. ($1.2B), China ($1.1B) and Germany ($932M), together accounting for 30% of global imports. In 2016, the average import price for polycarboxylic acid amounted to $986 per tonne, going down by -8.1% against the previous year. In general, polycarboxylic acid import price continues to indicate a moderate setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when import price increased by 27% y-o-y. In that year, average polycarboxylic acid import price reached its maximum level of $1,512 per tonne. From 2012 to 2016, growth of average polycarboxylic acid import price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Japan ($1,298 per tonne), while Lithuania ($651 per tonne) was among the lowest.
