Which Country Imports the Most Polyamides in the World?

In 2016, the global imports of polyamide amounted to 6.2M tonnes, ascending by 3% against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when it surged by 23% from the previous year level. Global polyamide import peaked in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

In value terms, polyamide imports stood at $13B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a slight increase from 2007 to 2016: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, polyamide imports decreased by -18.3% against its level of 2014. Global polyamide import peaked of $16B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Polyamide Imports By Country

The U.S. (853K tonnes), and China (829K tonnes) were the main importers of polyamide in 2016, amounting to near 14%, and 13% of total imports, respectively. Germany (510K tonnes) took a 8% share (based on tonnes) of global polyamide imports, which put it in second place, following Belgium (7%), and the Netherlands (6%). Italy (263K tonnes), South Korea (203K tonnes), Japan (175K tonnes), France (157K tonnes), India (157K tonnes), the UK (149K tonnes), and Mexico (131K tonnes) occupied the mild share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of polyamide imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by India (+21.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polyamide markets worldwide were China ($2.3B), Germany ($1.3B) and Belgium ($635M), with a combined 33% share of global imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Italy, Japan, the U.S., France, Mexico, the UK, India and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 32%.

India (+15.1% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the polyamide imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Polyamide Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for polyamide amounted to $2,055 per tonne, going down by -8.1% against the previous year. Overall, polyamide import price continues to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when import increased by 20% from the previous year level. Global polyamide import peaked of $2,775 per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was Mexico ($3,585 per tonne), while the Netherlands ($397 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of polyamide import prices was attained by the UK (+5.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
