Which Country Imports the Most Palm Oil in the World?

Global palm oil imports amounted to 41,832 thousand tonnes in 2015, growing by +13.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global palm oil imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +49% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global palm oil imports reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, global palm oil imports amounted to $28,844 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global palm oil imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +6.5%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Palm Oil Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of the palm oil imports in 2015 were India (9,536 thousand tonnes), China (5,909 thousand tonnes), Bangladesh (2,816 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 44% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of palm oil imports among the main importing countries was attained by Italy (+15.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India (5,922 million USD), China (3,704 million USD) and Bangladesh (1,785 million USD) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2015, together accounting for 40% of total imports.

Ethiopia (+42.1% per year) had the highest growth rates of palm oil imports among the main importing countries over the last eight years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
