Which Country Imports the Most Lasers, Other Than Laser Diodes in the World?

In 2016, approx. 1.7M tonnes of laser were imported worldwide; picking up by 13% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a remarkable growth from 2007 to 2016: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, laser imports increased by +86.4% against its level of 2007. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012, when imports increased by 15% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global laser imports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

In value terms, laser imports amounted to $65B in 2016. Overall, laser imports continue to indicate a slight slump. Over the period under review, global laser imports reached its maximum level of $89B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Laser Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of laser imports in 2016 were China (577K tonnes), South Korea (466K tonnes), and Mexico (320K tonnes), together resulting at 78% of total import. Germany (109K tonnes) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (87K tonnes). All these countries together took near 11% share of total imports. China, Hong Kong SAR (45K tonnes), and Thailand (42K tonnes) held the minor share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of laser imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Malaysia (+42.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($38B) constitutes the largest market for imported laser worldwide, making up 58% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China, Hong Kong SAR ($3.8B), with the share of 6% of global imports. It was followed by Mexico, with the share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of laser imports in China decreased by -1.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates: China, Hong Kong SAR (+0.3% per year) and Mexico (-5.0% per year).

Laser Import Prices By Country

The average laser import price stood at $37 per kg in 2016, lowering by -25.5% against the previous year. Overall, laser import price continues to indicate a drastic drop. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when import increased by 21% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average laser import price reached its maximum level of $84 per kg in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was China, Hong Kong SAR ($86 per kg), while South Korea ($5,950 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of laser import prices was attained by South Korea (+5.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
