Smart Card Imports By Country

In 2016, China (96K tonnes), Austria (82K tonnes), Poland (57K tonnes), the UK (49K tonnes), Germany (45K tonnes), France (40K tonnes), South Korea (37K tonnes), Japan (30K tonnes), the Netherlands (28K tonnes), Spain (23K tonnes), Brazil (17K tonnes), and Italy (12K tonnes) were the major importers of smart card in the world, comprising 77% of total import.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of smart card imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (+21.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest smart card markets worldwide were China ($5.2B), Germany ($3.5B) and the UK ($2.6B), with a combined 21% share of global imports.The Netherlands, France, Japan, Poland, Austria, South Korea, Spain, Italy and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Poland (+12.1% per year) had the highest growth rate of smart card imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

The average smart card import price stood at $81 per kg in 2016, declining by ;6.8% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a prominent growth from 2007 to 2016: the import price value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, smart card import price decreased by ;7.4% against its level of 2014. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014, when it surged by 19% from the previous year level. In that year, average smart card import price attained its maximum level of $87 per kg. From 2015 to 2016, growth of average smart card import price failed to regain its strength.
