Which Country Imports the Most Household Washing and Drying Machines in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Household Sewing Machines ; Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2016, the global sewing machine imports totaled 428K tonnes, ascending by 2% against the previous year figure. In general, sewing machine imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, an increase of 17% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global sewing machine imports reached its maximum volume of 448K tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, sewing machine imports totaled $5.2B in 2016. Overall, sewing machine imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global sewing machine imports reached its maximum level of $5.4B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Sewing Machine Imports By Country

China (114K tonnes) represented the major importing country with an import of around 114K tonnes, which reached 27% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (41K tonnes), constituting 10% share of total sewing machine imports. The following importers ; Germany (18K tonnes), Indonesia (17K tonnes), India (16K tonnes), Japan (16K tonnes), the Netherlands (14K tonnes), Malaysia (10K tonnes), Bangladesh (9.6K tonnes), Thailand (7.6K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (7.2K tonnes), and Russia (7K tonnes) together made up 29% of total imports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, the Netherlands (+11.4%), Nigeria (+9.9%), Indonesia (+7.4%), Germany (+6.1%), India (+5.5%), Bangladesh (+5.2%), and Malaysia (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +11.4% from 2007;2016. By contrast, Thailand (;1.5%), Japan (;3.3%), Russia (;5.6%), and China, Hong Kong SAR (;8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of China, Hong Kong SAR, and China increased by 2%, and 2% percentage points, while Germany (;1.7%), Indonesia (;1.9%), the Netherlands (;2.0%), and Nigeria (;5.5%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sewing machine markets worldwide were Germany ($323M), Bangladesh ($272M) and India ($243M), together comprising 16% of global imports.Japan, China, China, Hong Kong SAR, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Russia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Indonesia (+18.6% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the sewing machine imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sewing Machine Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for sewing machine amounted to $12 per kg, approximately equating the previous year level. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%.The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when it surged by 15% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, average sewing machine import price reached its maximum level of $12 per kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was Bangladesh ($28 per kg), while China ($1,627 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of sewing machine import prices was attained by Indonesia (+10.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2016, China (893K tonnes), followed by Italy (495K tonnes), Poland (420K tonnes), South Korea (417K tonnes), Turkey (393K tonnes), and the U.S. (271K tonnes) were the key importers of washing machine, together committing 49% of total imports. The following importers - the UK (260K tonnes), Thailand (217K tonnes), Germany (212K tonnes), France (196K tonnes), Slovakia (165K tonnes), and Japan (157K tonnes) together made up 20% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of washing machine imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Poland (+13.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest washing machine markets worldwide were the U.S. ($1.8B), Japan ($942M) and the UK ($862M), with a combined 27% share of global imports.Germany, France, Italy, Poland, South Korea, China, Turkey, Slovakia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

In 2016, the average import price for washing machine amounted to $2,229 per tonne, coming down by -3.2% against the previous year. In general, washing machine import price continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, an increase of 8% y-o-y. In that year, average washing machine import price attained its maximum level of $2,615 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average washing machine import price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was the U.S. ($6,552 per tonne), while China ($155 per tonne) was among the lowest.
