Which Country Imports the Most Green Peas in the World?

Global green peas imports amounted to 262 thousand tonnes in 2015, waning by -21.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global green peas imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +20% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global green peas imports attained its maximum volume of 335 thousand tonnes in 2014, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, global green peas imports amounted to $377 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global green peas imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +3.1%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Green Peas Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the green peas imports in absolute volumes was Belgium (113 thousand tonnes), accounting for 43% of global imports. It was followed by the United States (38 thousand tonnes), with a share of 15% of global imports. Moreover, green peas imports in Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, the United States (38 thousand tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the Netherlands with a share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of green peas imports in Belgium stood at +9.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+2.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-3.9% per year).

In value terms, the United States (70 million USD), the Netherlands (51 million USD) and the United Kingdom (51 million USD) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2015, together accounting for 46% of total imports.

Canada (+7.7% per year) had the highest growth rates of green peas imports among the main importing countries over the last eight years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
