Which Country Imports the Most Flax Fiber in the World?

Global flax fiber imports amounted to 206 thousand tonnes in 2015, falling by -8.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global flax fiber imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +51% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global flax fiber imports attained its maximum volume of 224 thousand tonnes in 2014, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, global flax fiber imports amounted to $570 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global flax fiber imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +4.3%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Flax Fiber Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the flax fiber imports in absolute volumes was China (120 thousand tonnes), accounting for 58% of global imports. It was followed by Belgium (32 thousand tonnes), with a share of 16% of global imports. Moreover, flax fiber imports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Belgium (32 thousand tonnes), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by India with a share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of flax fiber imports in China stood at +2.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Belgium (+2.5% per year) and India (+11.8% per year).

In value terms, the country with the largest volume of imports of flax fiber in absolute volumes was China (361 million USD), making up 63% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Belgium (69 million USD), with a share of 12% of global imports. Moreover, flax fiber imports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Belgium (69 million USD), fivefold. It was followed by India with a share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of flax fiber imports in China was at +6.4%. The remaining importing countries experienced the following average annual growth rates: Belgium (+2.2% per year) and India (+15.1% per year).
