Global corrugated paper import peaked of $1.9B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Corrugated Paper Imports By Country

The U.S. (388K tonnes), Mexico (348K tonnes), and Germany (277K tonnes) represented roughly 35% of total imports of corrugated paper in 2016. Canada (140K tonnes) took a 5% share (based on tonnes) of global corrugated paper imports, which put it in second place, following France (5%). Poland (100K tonnes), Ireland (84K tonnes), Belgium (79K tonnes), Czech Republic (76K tonnes), the Netherlands (75K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (75K tonnes), and Austria (69K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of corrugated paper imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Mexico (+10.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($324M) constitutes the largest market for imported corrugated paper worldwide, making up 18% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Canada ($143M), with the share of 8% of global imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with the share of 6%.

In Mexico, corrugated paper imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2007;2016. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates: Canada (+7.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+1.2% per year).

Corrugated Paper Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for corrugated paper amounted to $605 per tonne, approximately reflecting the previous year level. Overall, corrugated paper import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when import price increased by 11% year;to;year. In that year, average corrugated paper import price attained its maximum level of $681 per tonne. From 2012 to 2016, growth of average corrugated paper import price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was the Netherlands ($1,286 per tonne), while the U.S. ($118 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of corrugated paper import prices was attained by Czech Republic (+9.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.

In 2016, Israel (17K tonnes), distantly followed by China (6.6K tonnes), India (6.5K tonnes), and Pakistan (4K tonnes) represented the key importers of cotton sewing thread, together achieving 46% of total imports. South Korea (3.1K tonnes), the UK (2.4K tonnes), the Philippines (2.1K tonnes), Guatemala (2K tonnes), the Dominican Republic (1.4K tonnes), Oman (1.4K tonnes), Indonesia (1.4K tonnes), and Cambodia (1.3K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

While the share of Indonesia (4%) increased significantly, the share of South Korea (-1.9%), the Philippines (-2.4%), and Israel (-3.3%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cotton sewing thread markets worldwide were the Dominican Republic ($13M), South Korea ($13M) and Cambodia ($10M), with a combined 21% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Guatemala, the Philippines, the UK, China, India, Pakistan, Oman and Israel, which together accounted for a further 12%.
