Which Country Imports the Most Cotton Lint in the World?

Global cotton lint imports amounted to 6,925 thousand tonnes in 2015, falling by -11.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global cotton lint imports indicated a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +27% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cotton lint imports attained its maximum volume of 9,796 thousand tonnes in 2012. From 2013 to 2015, the total cotton lint imports growth failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, global cotton lint imports amounted to $248 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global cotton lint imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +3.4%. This trend pattern, however, fluctuated wildly throughout the analyzed period.

Cotton Lint Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of the cotton lint imports in 2015 were China (1,472 thousand tonnes), Bangladesh (1,320 thousand tonnes), Viet Nam (999 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 55% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of cotton lint imports among the main importing countries was attained by Bangladesh (+6.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China (2,563 million USD), Bangladesh (2,230 million USD) and Viet Nam (1,607 million USD) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2015, together accounting for 51% of total imports.

Bangladesh (+10.0% per year) had the highest growth rates of cotton lint imports among the main importing countries over the last eight years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
