Which Country Imports the Most Chick Peas in the World?

Global chick peas imports amounted to 1,742 thousand tonnes in 2015, increasing by +54.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global chick peas imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, was roller-coasting throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +21.0% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +77% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global chick peas imports attained its maximum volume of 2,147 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total chick peas imports growth failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, global chick peas imports amounted to $1,205 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global chick peas imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +16.7%. This trend pattern, however, was roller-coasting throughout the analyzed period.

Chick Peas Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the chick peas imports in absolute volumes was India (688 thousand tonnes), accounting for 40% of global imports. It was followed by Bangladesh (294 thousand tonnes), with a share of 17% of global imports. Moreover, chick peas imports in India exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Bangladesh (294 thousand tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the United Arab Emirates with a share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of chick peas imports in India stood at +14.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Bangladesh (+18.9% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.8% per year).

In value terms, the country with the largest volume of imports of chick peas in absolute volumes was India (430 million USD), making up 36% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Bangladesh (155 million USD), with a share of 13% of global imports. Moreover, chick peas imports in India exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Bangladesh (155 million USD), threefold. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates with a share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of chick peas imports in India was at +19.3%. The remaining importing countries experienced the following average annual growth rates: Bangladesh (+15.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.4% per year).
