Which Country Imports the Most Cassava in the World?

Global cassava imports amounted to 11,790 thousand tonnes in 2015, growing by +16.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global cassava imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +55% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cassava imports reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, global cassava imports amounted to $2,732 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global cassava imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +12.2%. This trend pattern, however, was roller-coasting throughout the analyzed period.

Cassava Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the cassava imports in absolute volumes was China (9,376 thousand tonnes), accounting for 80% of global imports. It was followed by Thailand (1,704 thousand tonnes), with a share of 14% of global imports. Moreover, cassava imports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Thailand (1,704 thousand tonnes), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Rep. of Korea with a share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of cassava imports in China stood at +9.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Thailand (+66.4% per year) and Rep. of Korea (+0.3% per year).

In value terms, the country with the largest volume of imports of cassava in absolute volumes was China (2,120 million USD), making up 78% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Viet Nam (225 million USD), with a share of 8% of global imports. Moreover, cassava imports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Viet Nam (225 million USD), ninefold. It was followed by Thailand with a share of 8%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of cassava imports in China was at +15.7%. The remaining importing countries experienced the following average annual growth rates: Viet Nam (+47.6% per year) and Thailand (+100.9% per year).
