Which Country Imports the Most Beef in the World?

Global beef imports amounted to 1,925 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, the global beef imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +18% from the previous year level. In that year, the global beef imports attained its maximum volume of 1,989 thousand tonnes. From 2014 to 2015, the total beef imports growth failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, global beef imports amounted to $7,707 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global beef imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +2.5%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Beef Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of the beef imports in 2015 were Italy (290 thousand tonnes), the Netherlands (270 thousand tonnes), Germany (150 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 37% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of beef imports among the main importing countries was attained by China (+112.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy (1,376 million USD), the Netherlands (896 million USD) and Germany (598 million USD) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2015, together accounting for 37% of total imports.

Russia (+17.4% per year) had the highest growth rates of beef imports among the main importing countries over the last eight years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
