In 2016, approx. 227M tonnes of aluminium were imported worldwide; remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when it surged by 5% y;o;y. Over the period under review, global aluminium imports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aluminium imports totaled $46B in 2016. In general, aluminium imports continue to indicate a moderate decline. Over the period under review, global aluminium imports attained its maximum level of $58B in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Aluminium Imports By Country

Mozambique (179M tonnes) prevails in aluminium imports structure, resulting at 179M tonnes, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2016. The following importers ; Oman (4.1M tonnes), the U.S. (3.8M tonnes), and Russia (3.6M tonnes) occupied near 5% of total imports, each.

Imports into Mozambique increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Oman (+6.3%), and the U.S. (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +6.3% from 2007;2016. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2007 to 2016, the share of Mozambique decreased by ;15.8% percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the U.S. ($8.2B) constitutes the largest market for imported aluminium worldwide, making up 18% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Mozambique ($106M), with the share of 0.2% of global imports. It was followed by Russia, with the share of 0.2%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of aluminium imports in the U.S. declined by ;0.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates: Mozambique (;18.1% per year) and Russia (+8.3% per year).

Aluminium Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for aluminium amounted to $201 per tonne, reducing by ;6.5% against the previous year. Overall, aluminium import price continues to indicate a drastic deduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when it surged by 37% year;to;year. Global aluminium import peaked of $318 per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was the U.S. ($2,156 per tonne), while Mozambique ($1 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of aluminium import prices was attained by Russia (+8.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
