Which Country Imports the Most Aluminium Tubes in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Aluminium Ores And Concentrates (Bauxite) ; Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2016, the amount of aluminium imported worldwide stood at 132M tonnes, going down by ;10.6% against the previous year level. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015, when it surged by 25% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global aluminium imports reached its maximum volume of 158M tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, aluminium imports totaled $4.1B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a measured expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, aluminium imports decreased by ;31.2% against its level of 2013. In that year, global aluminium imports reached its maximum level of $5.9B. From 2014 to 2016, growth of global aluminium imports stood at a somewhat lower level.

Aluminium Imports By Country

In 2016, China (52M tonnes) was the key importer for aluminium, comprising 39% of total imports. Australia (26M tonnes) ranks second globally in aluminium imports with a 19% share, following Guinea (19%). Ireland (4.7M tonnes), Spain (4.3M tonnes), Ukraine (3.9M tonnes), Canada (3.6M tonnes), and Germany (2.2M tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

China was also the fastest growing in terms of the aluminium imports, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Guinea (+2.4%), Spain (+2.1%), Australia (+1.5%), and Ireland (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ukraine (;1.6%), and Germany (;3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Australia (;2.4%), Guinea (;3.6%), and China (;21.7%) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest aluminium markets worldwide were Guinea (UNKNOWN), China ($2.5B) and Ireland ($219M), together comprising ;% of global imports.

Guinea (nan% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of aluminium imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Aluminium Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for aluminium amounted to $31 per tonne, going down by ;8.8% against the previous year. Overall, aluminium import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when import price increased by 34% against the previous year level. In that year, average aluminium import price attained its maximum level of $39 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average aluminium import price stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Germany ($49 per tonne), while Australia ($0 per kg) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of aluminium import prices was attained by Ireland (+2.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Aluminium Tube Imports By Country

In 2016, China (147K tonnes), distantly followed by the U.S. (57K tonnes), Germany (55K tonnes), and Mexico (44K tonnes) were the largest importers of aluminium tube, together constituting 42% of total imports. Czech Republic (27K tonnes), South Korea (26K tonnes), Italy (23K tonnes), South Africa (21K tonnes), Canada (21K tonnes), France (20K tonnes), Denmark (18K tonnes), and Belgium (17K tonnes) took the mild share of total imports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, the U.S. (+5.9%), Mexico (+5.5%), Canada (+2.8%), South Africa (+2.3%), and Belgium (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the U.S. emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +5.9% from 2007-2016. Denmark, and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.1%), South Korea (-4.5%), Italy (-5.0%), and Czech Republic (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Czech Republic (5%), China (2%), Italy (2%), and South Korea (2%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Mexico, and the U.S. saw its share reduced by -2.3%, and -3.2% from 2007 to 2016, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest aluminium tube markets worldwide were Mexico ($241M), Germany ($230M) and the U.S. ($165M), with a combined 31% share of global imports.

Mexico (+6.5% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of aluminium tube imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Aluminium Tube Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for aluminium tube amounted to $2,852 per tonne, coming down by -3.9% against the previous year. Overall, aluminium tube import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, an increase of 28% year-to-year. Global aluminium tube import peaked of $3,282 per tonne in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Czech Republic ($5,716 per tonne), while China ($418 per tonne) was among the lowest.
