Which Country Exports the Most Vinegar in the World?

Global vinegar exports totaled 505K tonnes in 2016, picking up by 7% against the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a strong growth from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, vinegar exports increased by +73.6% against its level of 2009. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011, when exports increased by 25% y-o-y. Global vinegar export peaked in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, vinegar exports totaled $607M in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Over the period under review, global vinegar exports attained its maximum level of $613M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Vinegar Exports By Country

In 2016, Italy (121K tonnes), distantly followed by Germany (53K tonnes), Spain (43K tonnes), France (39K tonnes), Greece (34K tonnes), the Netherlands (31K tonnes), and Czech Republic (28K tonnes) were the main exporters of vinegar, together constituting 69% of total exports. The following exporters - Slovakia (19K tonnes), the U.S. (16K tonnes), Japan (16K tonnes), the UK (13K tonnes), and China (12K tonnes) together made up 15% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to vinegar exports from Italy stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Slovakia (+37.9%), the Netherlands (+21.2%), Czech Republic (+17.3%), Spain (+12.7%), the UK (+10.6%), China (+6.4%), France (+5.7%), Japan (+3.8%), and the U.S. (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +37.9% from 2007-2016. Germany, and Greece experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The UK (-1.6%), France (-3.0%), Slovakia (-3.6%), Czech Republic (-4.2%), the Netherlands (-5.0%), Spain (-5.7%), and Italy (-6.4%) significantly weakened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($279M) remains the largest vinegar supplier in the world, making up 46% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the U.S. ($57M), with the share of 9% of global exports. It was followed by Spain, with the share of 5%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of vinegar exports in Italy stood at +2.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: the U.S. (+17.4% per year) and Spain (+2.1% per year).

Vinegar Export Prices By Country

The average vinegar export price stood at $1,202 per tonne in 2016, approximately reflecting the previous year level. Overall, vinegar export price continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, an increase of 12% from the previous year level. In that year, average vinegar export price reached its maximum level of $1,488 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average vinegar export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was the U.S. ($3,583 per tonne), while Slovakia ($238 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of vinegar export prices was attained by the U.S. (+14.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
