Which Country Exports the Most Track Suits, Ski Suits and Swimwear in the World?

In 2016, the global sportswear exports amounted to 119K tonnes, coming up by 22% against the previous year figure. In general, sportswear exports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016, when export increased by 22% year-to-year. Global sportswear export peaked of 167K tonnes in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, sportswear exports amounted to $4.5B in 2016. In general, sportswear exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Global sportswear export peaked of $4.8B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Sportswear Exports By Country

China (35K tonnes) was the major exporting country with an export of around 35K tonnes, which recorded 30% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (8.9K tonnes), Cambodia (7.9K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (6.1K tonnes), and Turkey (6.1K tonnes), together constituting 24% share of total sportswear exports. Germany (5.1K tonnes), Italy (5K tonnes), Belgium (5K tonnes), Viet Nam (4.6K tonnes), the UK (4.5K tonnes), France (3.7K tonnes), and Bangladesh (3.6K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to sportswear exports from China stood at -10.8%. At the same time, Cambodia (+21.5%), China, Hong Kong SAR (+14.7%), Bangladesh (+13.3%), the UK (+11.5%), Turkey (+8.2%), Germany (+4.8%), Indonesia (+4.0%), Belgium (+3.9%), Viet Nam (+3.7%), and France (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +21.5% from 2007-2016. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2007 to 2016, the share of China increased by 53% percentage points, while Bangladesh (-2.0%), Indonesia (-2.2%), the UK (-2.3%), Turkey (-2.6%), China, Hong Kong SAR (-3.6%), and Cambodia (-5.4%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($1.6B) remains the largest sportswear supplier in the world, making up 36% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China, Hong Kong SAR ($399M), with the share of 9% of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with the share of 6%.

In China, sportswear exports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.5% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China, Hong Kong SAR (-1.8% per year) and Germany (+2.6% per year).

Sportswear Export Prices By Country

The average sportswear export price stood at $37 per kg in 2016, coming down by -17.5% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a pronounced increase from 2007 to 2016: the export price value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, an increase of 48% y-o-y. Global sportswear export peaked of $45 per kg in 2015, falling back in the following year.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was China, Hong Kong SAR ($65 per kg), while Bangladesh ($14 per kg) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of sportswear export prices was attained by Viet Nam (+18.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
