Which Country Exports the Most Toilet Paper in the World?

In 2016, the amount of toilet paper exported worldwide amounted to 5.3M tonnes, jumping by 4% against the previous year figure. In general, toilet paper exports continue to indicate a measured deduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, an increase of 8% from the previous year level. In that year, global toilet paper exports reached its maximum volume of 7.8M tonnes. From 2012 to 2016, growth of global toilet paper exports stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, toilet paper exports stood at $11B in 2016. Overall, toilet paper exports continue to indicate a drastic decline. Over the period under review, global toilet paper exports reached its maximum level of $23B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Toilet Paper Exports By Country

In 2016, China (660K tonnes), Germany (607K tonnes), Italy (517K tonnes), and the U.S. (444K tonnes) represented the key exporters of toilet paper in the world, committing 42% of total export. It was distantly followed by Poland (286K tonnes), and France (263K tonnes), together constituting 10% share of total toilet paper exports. Canada (237K tonnes), Sweden (176K tonnes), Belgium (128K tonnes), Slovakia (127K tonnes), the Netherlands (125K tonnes), and Spain (115K tonnes) occupied the weak share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of toilet paper exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by China (+4.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest toilet paper markets worldwide were China ($1.7B), Germany ($1.3B) and the U.S. ($922M), with a combined 37% share of global exports.

China (+10.1% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the toilet paper exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Toilet Paper Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for toilet paper amounted to $1,982 per tonne, waning by -7.9% against the previous year. Overall, toilet paper export price continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when export increased by 8% y-o-y. In that year, average toilet paper export price attained its maximum level of $2,913 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average toilet paper export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was China ($2,507 per tonne), while Poland ($1,463 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of toilet paper export prices was attained by China (+5.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
