Which Country Exports the Most Tableware in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Tableware - Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2016, the global tableware imports amounted to 700K tonnes, approximately equating the previous year figure. Overall, tableware imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014, when imports increased by 15% from the previous year level. In that year, global tableware imports reached its maximum volume of 778K tonnes. From 2015 to 2016, growth of global tableware imports stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, tableware imports stood at $2.1B in 2016. Overall, tableware imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In that year, global tableware imports attained its maximum level of $2.4B. From 2012 to 2016, growth of global tableware imports failed to regain its strength.

Tableware Imports By Country

China (371K tonnes) prevails in tableware imports structure, accounting for 371K tonnes, which was approx. 53% of total imports in 2016. It was distantly followed by Iran (33K tonnes), achieving 5% share of total tableware imports. The following importers - the Philippines (29K tonnes), India (22K tonnes), Singapore (18K tonnes), Germany (17K tonnes), the UK (16K tonnes), and France (11K tonnes) together made up 16% of total imports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, Singapore (+27.2%), Iran (+10.4%), and India (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2007-2016. By contrast, Germany (-1.3%), the UK (-2.3%), the Philippines (-3.6%), and France (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (2%) increased significantly, the share of Singapore (-2.3%), and Iran (-2.8%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest tableware markets worldwide were Germany ($180M), the UK ($117M) and France ($94M), with a combined 18% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Iran, Singapore, China, the Philippines and India, which together accounted for a further 5%.

Singapore (+30.3% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of tableware imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tableware Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for tableware amounted to $3,026 per tonne, going down by -8.5% against the previous year. In general, tableware import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when import increased by 11% against the previous year level. In that year, average tableware import price reached its maximum level of $3,358 per tonne. From 2012 to 2016, growth of average tableware import price stood at a somewhat lower level.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was Germany ($11 per kg), while China ($37 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of tableware import prices was attained by the Philippines (+8.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
