Which Country Exports the Most Tableware in the World?

In 2016, the amount of tableware exported worldwide amounted to 325K tonnes, descending by -7.6% against the previous year figure. In general, tableware exports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when export increased by 15% y-o-y. Global tableware export peaked of 453K tonnes in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, tableware exports totaled $2.4B in 2016. Overall, tableware exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Global tableware export peaked of $2.9B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Tableware Exports By Country

China (244K tonnes) prevails in tableware exports structure, reaching 244K tonnes, which was near 75% of total exports in 2016. The following exporters - India (14K tonnes), Viet Nam (10K tonnes), Germany (7.2K tonnes), United Arab Emirates (6K tonnes), and the Netherlands (5.2K tonnes) together made up 13% of total exports.

Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -4.3% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Viet Nam (+10.7%), the Netherlands (+5.8%), and Germany (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Viet Nam emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +10.7% from 2007-2016. India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, United Arab Emirates (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (37%) increased significantly, the share of Viet Nam (-1.9%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($1.5B) remains the largest tableware supplier in the world, making up 62% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Viet Nam ($156M), with the share of 6% of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with the share of 5%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value of tableware exports in China expanded at +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Viet Nam (+6.4% per year) and Germany (+0.7% per year).

Tableware Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for tableware amounted to $7,429 per tonne, coming down by -7.6% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a tangible growth from 2007 to 2016: the export price value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, tableware export price increased by +46.4% against its level of 2009. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when it surged by 16% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average tableware export price attained its maximum level of $8,041 per tonne in 2015, falling back in the following year.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($18 per kg), while United Arab Emirates ($2,175 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of tableware export prices was attained by China (+5.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
