Which Country Exports the Most T-Shirts in the World?

In 2016, approx. 1.7M tonnes of t-shirt were exported worldwide; surging by 5% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when export increased by 20% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global t-shirt exports attained its maximum volume of 1.8M tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, t-shirt exports totaled $44B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Global t-shirt export peaked of $45B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

T-Shirt Exports By Country

China (289K tonnes), Bangladesh (193K tonnes), Turkey (133K tonnes), India (95K tonnes), El Salvador (82K tonnes), the Dominican Republic (77K tonnes), Cambodia (76K tonnes), the U.S. (68K tonnes), Germany (64K tonnes), Viet Nam (61K tonnes), Spain (56K tonnes), and Belgium (50K tonnes) represented roughly 72% of total exports of t-shirt in 2016.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of t-shirt exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Cambodia (+34.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($8.6B), Bangladesh ($7B) and Turkey ($2.9B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together comprising 42% of global exports.India, Viet Nam, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Cambodia, El Salvador, the U.S. and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Cambodia (+37.7% per year) had the highest growth rate of t-shirt exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

T-Shirt Export Prices By Country

The average t-shirt export price stood at $25 per kg in 2016, descending by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%.The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, when it surged by 18% from the previous year level. In that year, average t-shirt export price reached its maximum level of $28 per kg. From 2015 to 2016, growth of average t-shirt export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Bangladesh ($36 per kg), while the Dominican Republic ($4,508 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of t-shirt export prices was attained by Bangladesh (+4.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
