Which Country Exports the Most Sunglasses in the World?

In 2016, the global exports of sunglasses amounted to 162K tonnes, growing by 7% against the previous year figure. Overall, sunglasses exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, an increase of 126% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global sunglasses exports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sunglasses exports stood at $9.2B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a remarkable increase from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +15.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, sunglasses exports increased by +78.9% against its level of 2009. Over the period under review, global sunglasses exports reached its maximum level in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Sunglasses Exports By Country

China (111K tonnes) dominates in sunglasses exports structure, accounting for 111K tonnes, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2016. Italy (11K tonnes) took a 7% share (based on tonnes) of global sunglasses exports, which put it in second place, following China, Hong Kong SAR (5%). The U.S. (6.5K tonnes), the UK (3.7K tonnes), Germany (3.5K tonnes), and France (2.5K tonnes) took the minor share of total exports.

China was also the fastest growing in terms of the sunglasses exports, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, China, Hong Kong SAR (+9.1%), the U.S. (+8.4%), France (+6.7%), Germany (+5.6%), and Italy (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the UK (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The UK (2%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the U.S., Italy, China, Hong Kong SAR, and China saw its share reduced by -2.1%, -2.1%, -2.6%, and -62.4% from 2007 to 2016, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sunglasses markets worldwide were China ($2.8B), Italy ($2.7B) and China, Hong Kong SAR ($712M), together accounting for 68% of global exports.

China (+9.7% per year) experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to the sunglasses exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sunglasses Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for sunglasses amounted to $57 per kg, approximately reflecting the previous year level. In general, sunglasses export price continues to indicate a deep drop. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012, when it surged by 16% from the previous year level. Global sunglasses export peaked of $134 per kg in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($256 per kg), while China ($25 per kg) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of sunglasses export prices was attained by the UK (+15.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
